What are antioxidants?
An antioxidant is a substance that retards or prevents deterioration, damage or destruction by oxidation.

What are free radicals?
Free radicals are unbalanced atoms that are missing a circulating electron. All matter consists of atoms which collectively form molecules. (e.g.. a molecule of water consists of 2 atoms of hydrogen and 1atom of oxygen) Each atom has circulating electrons. If these are not balanced i.e.. paired, they are unstable and  are known as free radicals. They live for a short tie but are extremely interactive in that their one aim is to steal a circulating electron off a neighboring atom, there by balancing itself but producing another free radical i.e. a chain reaction that can do a lot of harm. The body has to withstand thousands of hits each day. Antioxidants neutralise free radicals action by pairing up their free electrons.

Free Radicals are produced naturally as a result of our metabolic process and the body produces antioxidants to counteract them. However, our environment and lifestyle e.g. pollution, cigarette smoke, stress, toxic chemicals and radiation cause the production of excessive damaging free radicals. The body is like a battle field and one needs to have adequate supplies of  antioxidants to counteract them. Antioxidant supplication is essential.

Traditional uses of herbs:

Rose Hip (Rosa canina) provide one of the best and most natural sources of Vitamin C. Helps with the body's defences against infections especially the development of colds. Helps in cases of constipation and minor gall bladder problems as well as conditions of the kidney and bladder. Rich in inherent bioflavonoids.

Acerola Cherry (Malpighia Punic folia) the richest known source of naturally occurring Vitamin C, (approximately 25% of the Fruit juice powder) which also contain s naturally occurring calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc phosphorus etc accompanied by its own bioflavonoids.

Grape Seed Extract (Vitis vinifera) Excellent source of proanthocyanidins (OPC) and bioflavonoids. Potent antioxidant and vasculoprotective. Increases intracellular Vitamin C levels, strengthens capillaries, scavenges free radicals and inhibits destruction of collagen (for sound tendons, ligaments, cartilage, blood vessels and younger skin). OPC research has shown in studies to lower blood cholesterol levels and deposits. OPC's are 50 times more powerful than Vitamin E and 20 times more powerful than Vitamin C.

Hawthorn flowers/tips (Crataegus monogyna) rich source of proanthocyanidins (OPC's) and bioflavonoids. Noted for its highly active antioxidant effects. Also useful as cardiac tonic. (Not widely used as an antioxidant due to its high cost).

Lemon bioflavonoids (Vitamin P) Vitamin C synergist - Enhances the properties and prevents it destruction by oxidation. Strengthens capillary walls. Beneficial for hypertension, respiratory infections, haemorrhoids, varicose veins, bleeding gums, retinal haemorrhages and eczema. 

Beta carotene readily converted to Vitamin A by the liver according to demand by cells. Prevents oxidation damage to DNA and RNA , cell proteins and membranes. Inhibits plaque cell formation. Increase interferon activity.

Zinc Necessary for the absorption and action of vitamins. Required for immune function. Constituent of approximately 25 enzymes involved in digestion. Vital for normal function of the prostrate gland.

Glycine (Amino acetate) Performs the most biochemical functions of any amino acid. Component of collagen. Detoxifier of phenols, benzoic acid and salicylates. Increases clearance of uric acid from kidneys and reduces residual volume in bladder. Helps with athletic performances.
